The Vision Quest

Getting in Touch with Where You Want to Go, Be, Do

This next step on the GPS – Business Navigator process is to project into the future what you want your life to be like 2, 3, 5, or even 10 years from where you are right now.  (see The Present for the first step)

This is where you get to Dream Big and swing for the fences.  You get to use your imagination and see yourself enjoying a perfect day in the future.

We actually take a look at two perfect days in your future.  A perfect day of work.  And a perfect day of play.

This exercise is best done when you can carve out at least 2 to 4 hours to allow your body to relax and your mind to run free with imagining how your life would be in the future.  Take a pen or pencil and a notepad and find a quiet, comfortable place where you can settle in to let your dreams unfold.

Begin with an outline by answering these questions about your future 5 years from now.
It is a perfect day of play:

  • Where are you?
  • Who are you with?
  • Are you on vacation?
  • When did you wake up?
  • What did you first notice upon awakening?
  • Go through the entire day in as much description as possible.  Remember this is a perfect play day – no work!
  • Where did you go for lunch?  What did you have?  Who is with you?
  • What are the smells around you?  What are the sounds?
  • What are you feeling?
  • Continue through the day – what are you making time for?  What are you doing?
  • When do you go to sleep?
  • What do you dream?
  • Combine your dream of the future with the reality that you want to create

Now, do the same exercise but this time, do it with your perfect work day (if you will still be working 5 years from now)

Once you’ve compiled both outlines, you now create the story of what your future holds.

Write the story first about your perfect day of play.  Tell us who you are, where you are, who you are with, and what you are doing.  Fill the story with as much detail as you can imagine.  This is your story and it is your perfect day.  From the moment that you wake up, until the moment you drift off to sleep – create the story of your life and how it will be 5 years into the future.  Please resist the urge to let reality creep in or judgement on yourself about what you want.  Let it flow from your heart and your soul.  And let your story dance alive with the use of all of your senses.  What do you see?  What do you smell?  What do you hear?  What are you feeling?

And once you’ve completed the play story, turn your attention to a perfect day of work.  Again, fill the story with as much detail as you can imagine.  Who are you serving through your work?  How are you serving them or engaging with them?  Where are you engaged in this work?  Do you work a full day or are you on a different schedule?  Are you traveling on this perfect work day?  Did you give a presentation somewhere?  Or were you at a book signing after giving a talk about your new book?  Again, this is your story – 5 years from now.  What can you imagine that you have created?  Bring this story to life with all the sounds, smells, sights, and feelings that you can muster.  Make it as wonderful as you want it to be.

And once you’ve got these stories done, be sure to share them with someone who cares about you.  It is in the sharing that you begin to feel celebrated and fully capable of bringing these visions into focus as dreams crafted into reality.

You are now ready to move into the next phase which is The Map.
